History

Haggar Clothing Co. was started in 1926 by Joseph Marion Haggar, an immigrant entrepreneur with a simple philosophy: offer great quality merchandise at a fair price, and treat customers the way he’d like to be treated. Through relentless hard work and determination, he quickly established a reputation of steadfast integrity and began a business built on a foundation of trust and value.

Through the years, J.M. Haggar grew his business based on innovation — not imitation — choosing to pave his own way. His factory was the first to bring the modern assembly line process to the manufacturing of apparel. He created the first Slacks in 1938, bridging the gap between a man’s dress and casual wardrobe for his customers’ “slack time” away from work. Haggar continued to lead menswear innovation with the introduction of pre-cuffed pants, wash and wear pants, expandable waist pants, forever-prest pants, wrinkle-free cotton casual pants and suit separates. Haggar also introduced the first pant hanger and the size strip sticker, and was also the first apparel company to advertise in national magazines and on television, as well as to adopt EDI and barcode technologies, innovations borrowed from other industries.

As the company crossed into a new century, Haggar continued to introduce new technologies and fabrics, and was one of the first mainstream apparel brands to use sustainable materials across several products, including its award-winning LK Life Khaki® brand. Haggar is the Official Clothing Partner of the Hockey Hall of Fame and has been the Official Provider of the Gold Jacket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinees since 1978.

Today, Haggar is one of the most well-known and successful men’s apparel companies in the United States. We attribute much of our success to knowing our customer, creating products that gain his loyalty and build his confidence while delivering on the promises of our founder, J.M. Haggar, weaving integrity and quality into every garment we make.
